Children’s day is a commemorative date celebrated all over the world annually in honour of children. The date of observance however varies by country.
In 1925 international Children’s day was first proclaimed in Geneva during the world conference on child welfare. Since then, it is celebrated on June 1 in most countries while the UN celebrates it on November 20.
Nigeria marks 27th May every year in honour of children. It is not a public holiday for workers as some erroneously believe but for only primary and secondary school Children.
The theme for this years celebration is Promoting Girl Child Education for sustainable Development.
This years celebration is special.
According to the wife of the president, Mrs Aisha Buhari, it will be the first to be marked in the peculiar situation of the covid 19 pandemic. She took to her twitter handle to congratulate Nigerian children and urge them to adhere to the protocols of the covid 19 while enjoying their day safely pending the reopening of schools.
The speaker of the house of representatives Femi Gbajabiamila in a statement assured he would not relent in pushing for the rights of the Nigerian Children.
Similarly, the senate president in a statement issued by his aide on media matters noted that quality education and improved health care is the surest route to a happy and fulfilling future for children.
