A final year Engineering student shot dead by armed robbers in South Africa

A Civil Engineering student has been shot dead by armed robbers in South Africa.

The deceased who is identified as Mbongeni ‘Doctor’ Mthombeni was a final year student Umfolozi TVET College in KwaZulu-Natal Province.

It was gathered that 2 armed robbers approached him and his female friend near Jabulani City at about 8pm on Thursday October 31 as he was accompanying her to her house after returning his laptop at his rental cottage.

Shots were said to have been fired during the robbery as they both fled the scene and Mbongeni’s friend reported the incident to the Police immediately.

The Police got no clue of any information at the scene and was reported that the students walking to the Campus discovered his lifeless body in the bush with gun shots in his abdomen.

The incident sent shock waves through the residents, posing a question about the safety of students living in rental cottages outside the campus.

‘Many students have reported cases, yet there are no responses from the police. We demand justice for our brother and we won’t rest until criminals here are rooted out,’ said SRC president, Ndlelenhle Mlaba.

Umfolozi TVET College expressed its condolences, saying Mbongeni was a humble and respectful student.

“He will be sorely missed by his lecturers and fellow students,’ said the statement.
